Companies that annually submit their Mandatory Grant claim (Actual Training Report / Workplace Skills Plan) to their relevant SETA can also apply for the Discretionary Grant.
Companies are able to apply for the grant on Learnerships, Apprenticeships, Bursaries, Skills programs etc. – Training programs that lead to a full qualification or form part of a qualification – these are often called PIVOTAL programs.
The relevant SETA will open up a “window application period” each year to inform levy-paying companies that the application process for discretionary grants has opened. In the communication, the SETA will advise what are occupational shortages/scarce and critical skills in the sector and what training programs can be applied for to address these shortages/scares and critical skills.
This grant is of total discretion of the relevant SETA and is not a given, it is at each SETA sole discretion. The SETA board of trustee meet and consider what companies and what amount will be awarded to the approved companies, thus applying will not mean a granted Discretionary grant. One should also keep in mind that each SETA has its own criteria that a levy paying company needs to adhere to be considered for this grant.
The board criteria are the following but not limited to –
- Levy contributions are up-to-date.
- Approved Actual Training Report / Workplace Skills Plan.
- Falls in the relevant SETA’s sector needs.
