Security of personal information is a significant aspect of the regulatory framework in our modern world.
As more and more public or private bodies obtain data of a personal nature from juristic persons or individuals, most jurisdictions have made provision for a regulatory framework in terms of which this personal information is processed in a safe and secure manner. The need for such regulations had been elevated by contemporary crime practices such as cybercrime and identity theft that is very prevalent today.
In this course we will provide you with the necessary skills to understand the requirements of personal information being processed in a safe and secure manner in terms of the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act.
The course looks at an introduction and a discussion of the extent of the POPI Act, deliberating on the conditions for lawful processing of personal information and the rights of data subjects when personal information is being processed. This will provide you with a reasonable understanding of the necessary procedures required for a public or private entity to comply with the Act.
We also touch on specific issues such as information being provided to another jurisdiction and prior authorisation being required for certain information being processed, concluding with the enforceability of the Act which will assist you in identifying possible pitfalls and consequences of non-compliance with the POPI Act.
