About SEESA BEE

Guiding Black Economic Empowerment towards profit, productivity and long-term economic success

SEESA has a team of lawyers who are all specialists in BEE and BBBEE and who keep up to the minute with new developments and legislation in this field.

To give you a bit of background, BEE evolved from a narrow-based approach where compliance was measured on one component alone and that was ownership. The BBBEE or Triple-BEE evolution, contrary to the sound of it, is good news for the business owner, because it gives you seven scorecard compliance components, so it’s not about handing over your business ownership as some people think.

“As legal specialists in Black Economic Empowerment, we advise our clients how to maximise their BBBEE scorecard to increase their productivity and profitability,” says SEESA’s Operational Director, Ursula Botha.

“The scorecard can be a positive, driving force in each and every business, if employers are empowered with the knowledge of how to apply it astutely and effectively.”

Given the complexity of BBBEE and the scorecard, many employers lack the knowledge of what compliance really means. Some employers continue to think that compliance means black-owned businesses when this is only one aspect of the scorecard.

SEESA not only helps businesses to apply the scorecard components but also to implement skills development and training – which has proved to be the biggest success factor in BEE transformation, with enhanced productivity and profits.

To ensure that its legal consultants are constantly updated with the latest legislation and codes, SEESA has a full-time legal research team dedicated to BEE.

From micro-enterprises to businesses with a turnover of R35-million-plus, SEESA assists its 4 000 BEE clients to transform into thriving BEE-compliant concerns.

SEESA assists businesses on an ongoing basis through consultation, in order to reach the targets set in the companies BBBEE strategic plan.  Because all companies differ; the specific requirements of each business needs to be addressed accordingly. BBBEE strategies are customised by SEESA in order to accommodate each company’s needs.

Clients pay a once-off joining fee and a highly affordable monthly retainer to secure ongoing BEE legal support.

“Positively implemented, BBBEE can help create a better skilled business environment with productive employees. What this means is growth and profit for your business and growth and profit for South Africa’s economy.” – Gideon Gerber, SEESA International Group Director

Ranking enterprises using the Scorecard

Government will use the total score to rank enterprises according to their progress in achieving broadbased black economic empowerment, using the following:

How does this affect my business?

The scorecard will be used to rank and categorise businesses for the following purposes:

  • The issuing of licenses, concessions or other authorisations;
  • Preferential procurement;
  • The sale of state-owned enterprises;
  • Entering into partnerships with the private sector;
  • The provision of financing and other forms of support

Many small businesses providing services or goods to big private enterprises and enterprises dependent on state procurement/permit/licenses, etc. will be obliged to be BEE compliant due to the preferential procurement policy of that business. Businesses’ own BEE compliance will depend interalia on the compliance of their suppliers.
